Modified sine wave inverters are able to convert the DC power that is delivered through your vehicle's 12 volt battery/alternator into useable AC power, similar to the kind of power that most appliances and electronics need.
A 400 watt inverter is ample power for running even the most power hungry laptop workstation, portable inkjet printer, cell phone charger, or whatever type of small appliance you may need to have with you in your vehicle.
In contrast, A pure sine wave power inverter is able to deliver power that is identical in wavelength to the power delivered to your home and office by the power company. The advantage to pure sine wave is that equipment that is sensitive to power fluctuations, such as laser printer, medical equipment, microwave ovens, etc. will run at full capacity, just as they would in normal home or office environments.
Modified sine wave, or pure sine wave is a choice you must make based on your specific requirements. If in doubt, go with pure sine wave, the additional cost is easily justified in most cases since there is no doubt that your electronics will run perfectly.
